beat-HEART-beat

I saw a heart:
A flesh and blood heart. It was grossly fresh and almost gory. But its rawness was pure and clean. Pumping bright red liquid life. Shamelessly apparent, it's vulnerability invited cruel affliction. Then without warning it was pierced--stabbed to the deepest of flesh. It was shocking to me, actually. And dreadfully painful. But still it beat, harder and stronger--spewing out all the more liquid life.

Then I saw another heart:
It was revoltingly thick with callus. Where the other was tender with red flesh, this was cracked, thick and dry. Barely pink was masked by hardened yellow and grey. So much so, that even though it was still alive, you would not know it. You could not see it beating. Hard and impenetrable, this heart could not be broken.

"If the Sword ever comes to you, never harden yourself against it, but let it pierce you. You must be yielded to the Word of God. I praise God for the Sword that cuts us, and for a tender conscience... First we need to be converted, to become like little children, and to have the hard heart taken away--to have a heart that is broken and melted with a the love of God."
